Cyanotype
Potassium ferricyanide also has a reactivity of zero and a flammability rating of zero but a health hazard of two. These are the two steps if you were to come in contact with this chemical:
1. Wash with soap and water. Cover the irritated skin with an emollient. Get medical attention if irritation develops. Cold water may be used. 2. Check for and remove any contact lenses. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Cold water may be used. Get medical attention if irritation occurs. |
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints. The process uses two chemicals:
Potassium ferricyanide and Ferric ammonium citrate. Ferric Ammonium Citrate has a reactivity of zero and health and flammability ratings of one. If you were to get it on your skin or have it come in contact with your eyes there are two steps you can use to get it off your skin and/or eyes safely: 1. |
The cyanotype that we made in class used an emulsion that was a green color when it was applied to the paper and we waited for the emulsion to dry for about 6 minutes. When we placed it outside it was positioned under a glass sheet and the tracing paper was on top of the emulsion and was left there for about three minutes and the emulsion turned from green to a light blue. We then took the paper with the emulsion and put it in water and the tracings showed up on the paper in white. The blue also turned into a deeper royal blue with the white tracings inside of it. We then set them out to dry in the sun for about five minutes.
